Life with Two

We've squeezed a lot in during the first 6 weeks of Bennett's life. Life with two is busy. It takes us a while to get anywhere but my type A personality enjoys the challenge of planning ahead, packing the car for every possible scenario and getting out. I can't stay home all day. Grayson has continued to go to Mrs. Sam's and it has been a huge blessing even though it wasn't our original plan. Some days I pick him up early for the pool or keep him home but most days he goes to school and it is so nice to know that he is playing with friends, learning, eating, and sleeping while I get a few things done at home.  Some days I rest or get a chance to read (or blog) when Bennett is sleeping but most days I am cleaning Jamie's rental house between feedings, working on embroidery for someone,  cleaning our own house or keeping up with laundry. It's amazing how quickly a day can be filled - I don't think I would get anything done if I had them both home all day every day. You mommies that do that are miracle workers.

Bennett has his days where all he wants to do is be held and eat. He is super impatient when he's hungry - but everyone loves him. He is growing so quickly and I had to put away some newborn sleepers because he's just too long for them :( Grayson calls him "Bibbit" and is constantly checking on him and helping me. He loves to give him a paci, cover him up, rock him, and today he even told him to "shh" (finger over his lips and everything) Sometimes if he tries to help Bennett and he keeps crying, he comes to me and says "mommy do it" so that I can try to fix him.

Grayson's vocabulary is off the charts these days. He can say just about anything and is putting words together into sentences so quickly. The things he knows astound me. Recently he is obsessed with my nails and yesterday he noticed my earrings and said "earrings" - how does he even know that word? He's ridiculously smart. I love listening to him babble and repeat. We're also teaching him to say "Two" when we ask him how old he is - we're just practicing for 9 days from now! Eeek.

Here are a few pictures of our boys together and the adventures we've had over the last 6 weeks:

Bennett James Birth Story

We knew weeks ahead of time that Bennett would arrive on Friday, May 29th. We were scheduled at 37 weeks because of our blood incompatibility and we knew we would have a repeat c-section.
It was very different knowing when he was coming. Our families were here the day before and we had a plan of how Grayson would be taken care of through the weekend. I was packed and ready days before and I had been told several times step by step what would happen from the time we arrived at the hospital until we got to go home.

So Thursday, we went to the hospital for our pre-op appointment. They went ahead and drew my blood, put my hospital bands on my wrist, gave me instructions about taking a shower that night and not eating after midnight and then we were on our way home. Brandon's parents, nanny, and Jamie all arrived that night and we visited for a bit before heading to bed.

That night I woke up at about 1:00 am to go to the bathroom and after laying back down - I could not fall asleep. At first I just thought I had gas - so I kept trying to change positions to get relief but I realized a few minutes later that the pain was starting in my lower tummy and then wrapping around my back and lasting about a minute. After about 30 minutes of tossing and turning and just feeling very achy in my back, I decided to download a contraction timing app and to just see what was happening. When I first started timing they were only 6 or 7 minutes apart and lasting a little over a minute. This happened for about an hour. I started getting nervous that we were going to have to go in earlier to the hospital and I was annoyed that I couldn't get comfortable and sleep - especially considering I was going to be having my baby in about 6 hours anyway. They did finally spread to 11 minutes apart, then 15, then 30 and then I slept from about 4:00 to 5:00 before waking up to get ready to head to the hospital.

When we arrived at the hospital, we were led to our room and the nurses started asking more questions and putting information in the computer. I changed into the hospital gown, they put on the baby monitors, and they put in my IV which was probably the most painful of anything they did that day. Then they said the anesthesiologist would be in shortly to get me ready for that part. There were lots of people in and out of our room from about 7:00 to 7:30 getting the room ready and everyone getting on their OR gear. Dr. Womack and Carrington popped their heads in at some point to check in on us and told us they would see us in there.

Finally around 7:45 they wheeled my bed back to the operating room. I moved over to the operating table, they put in my spinal (which hurt less than the IV really) and then they quickly laid me down on the table as I could feel my legs falling asleep. At first I could still wiggle my toes and they said that was normal for now. Then they kept working on getting everything ready - hanging the dividing curtain, covering me with warm blankets and getting the room ready for Bennett's arrival.  The anesthesiologist kept checking with me to make sure I was feeling ok. After the first couple minutes it did feel funny to breathe and the oxygen in my nose made it hard to talk but I just kept taking deep breaths. I also got a little nauseous and she gave me something to help with that and it was immediately gone.

Finally they checked to make sure I was numb and then started operating. Brandon chose not to look as much this time. I felt like it took longer this time but maybe it was just because I was noticing every little thing and I wasn't completely exhausted like I was when we finally had to have a c-section with Grayson. All the sounds and pulling and pushing was just as described and finally they said that they had made it to my uterus. They told Brandon he could look as they broke my water and pulled Bennett out. They confirmed that he looked great even though Brandon told me that he was completely blue. He finally made a little cry and they held him up over the curtain for me to see. He was beautiful. They took him over to clean him off and I could see his little hands and toes peeking off the top of the table. We both immediately noticed how long his fingers and toes were. He was a tiny thing but they said his apgar scores were 8 and 8.  I just couldn't take my eyes off of him and as I was listening to the nurses talk about him and check him, I was just overwhelmed at God's goodness at getting us to this point. He was faithful even when I was fearful. Just hearing Bennett's mighty cries made me tear up in gratitude that my son had healthy lungs and he was here and safe.

After a few minutes of cleaning and checking him they wrapped him up and brought him to me. They laid him on my chest and I was able to move both of my arms to hold him and give him several kisses. The nurse told me that although he was doing well, they were a little concerned with how responsive he was so they wanted to check him out a little more thoroughly in the nursery. They reassured me that he thought he looked good and would be able to meet me in my room. Brandon stayed with Bennett and I just kept listening in on Carrington and Dr. Womack's conversation and closing my eyes to rest. I kept praying that Bennett would check out perfectly in the nursery. As they were finishing a nurse came in to let me know that Bennett was doing great and would meet me in my room and that he weighed in at a whopping 6 lbs 3 oz which is about the 50th percentile for 37 week babies.

A few minutes later they were done in the operating room and they transferred me back to my regular bed and wheeled me to my room. They checked my vitals and asked me a few more questions and then it felt like forever that I was waiting on them to bring me my baby. I finally asked them to call down to the nursery to see how long it would be and they said he was almost finished. Apparently there were lots of students in the Birthing Center and so they were walking them through every step of the process. They finally brought me my sweet boy and I got to nurse him immediately - so much easier the second time around. We had a few minutes to ourselves and then we decided to let everyone come back to meet him - both our parents, sisters, and Brandon's nanny.  Jamie recorded this video of Grayson meeting Bennett and I am so glad she did - what a perfect moment. Grayson already loves his brother and wants to check on him and give him his paci and he still doesn't really like it when he cries.

It was a perfectly sweet morning and it really did all go by so fast. I am so thankful that surgery is over and that I am healing. Recovering from any birth is hard but I know I will have to be slow getting back to my 100 mph lifestyle and keeping up with Grayson. I am thankful that each day will get better and we will learn and grow as a family.

Letters to my Boys

Brandon,
You are the most amazing daddy. Thank you for all your encouragement during this pregnancy. From the moment we found out about anti-E you have been reassuring and supportive. Thank you for praying with me and easing my fears. Thank you especially for the last few weeks where you've made yourself more available than ever - even in a season where you are juggling so much. I am so proud of you. You are a wonderful husband, a wonderful daddy, a wonderful friend, a wonderful real estate agent. I could not love you more. I can't wait to start this next chapter with you.
Leslie

Grayson,
I can't believe you are becoming a big brother. It only seems like yesterday they put you in my arms. I fall in love with you more every day. Your giggles and smiles, the way you repeat everything, even your feisty independence. You amaze me at the things you remember and how smart you are. I know things will change but I know you will love being a big brother. I couldn't imagine life without my little sister and I know you will be the same. Thanks for making me a mommy and for telling me that you love me. You will always be my baby. I love you.
Mommy

Bennett,
I can't believe that I will meet your sweet face so soon. You are already so loved. You have been so active this pregnancy and it reassures me that you are strong and ready to meet us. You are going to be a part of a family that is on-the-go and fun and busy and I hope you are ready for it! We can't wait to watch you grow and learn the things that make you special. We love you so much!
Mommy

Countdown to Bennett: 11 days

I will meet my second son in 11 days. In 11 days I will not be pregnant. In 11 days our lives will change. There will be some things I will miss about being pregnant and some things I won't and there are some things I'm looking forward to and some things that I'm dreading a little because I remember it from last time. It's all pulling me in different directions. I am so excited to meet Bennett yet I don't want to wish away these last 11 days of our family of 3. So I'm stretching out every moment by being thankful for them and being honest about the things I will miss and the things I won't - the things I'm looking forward to and those I am not. Here are a few of them:

I will miss:
- feeling Bennett kick and the constant hiccups
- an excuse to have a big belly
- the "me-time" hours that I have between when G goes to bed and when I go to bed

I will not miss:
- waking up to pee 2 or 3 times a night
- counting my carbs and checking my blood sugar
- the acne on my back
- swollen feet and calves
- the extra weight
- driving to Hickory every two weeks

I am looking forward to:
- seeing Bennett's sweet face and KNOWING he is healthy
- wearing my normal clothes (and shoes!)
- our family and friends coming to meet Bennett
- babywearing our sweet boy
- nursing
- enjoying an entire summer with all three of my boys

I am not looking forward to:
- the month-or-two-long period
- the soreness that is going to come from surgery and starting to nurse again
- pumping
- the lack of sleep
- not being able to pick grayson up

Daddy

I just have to take a moment to say how much I love my husband. I loved him before but seeing him grow as a daddy just makes me love him all the more. Brandon is so good with our boy. He started out not knowing anything about babies and kids but now Grayson is almost two and there could not be a more perfect daddy for him.

Brandon is so silly and fun. He keeps me from being smothering in my protectiveness. He wrestles Grayson and has him flipping upside down while letting all his little giggles out. He plays outside for hours with Grayson and has him doing all the things he's doing - throwing wood on the fire, riding the four wheeler or the lawn mower, feeding the chickens, and digging in the dirt. Grayson is one lucky little boy and I am one lucky mommy. We love daddy.

Only 4 weeks

I found out earlier this week that my doctors in Hickory and my doctors in Boone definitely want me to deliver at 37 weeks. Since I requested that Dr. Womack do my c-section (since she did my first and she's awesome) I thought I would have to wait until her on-call day the week after I turned 37 weeks but i also knew that the next week was when Carrington (my favorite midwife) was not going to be in Boone.

I told Carrington a while back that it looked like the timing might be off and she told me it would be fine if she wasn't there and although I guess that's true - she's just been there through it all: through my first few very early miscarriages, my pregnancy with grayson, the hours of labor and even through the unexpected c-section, losing a baby last spring,  getting pregnant again, telling me that i have this anti-E thing but that we'd figure it out together, and now - Bennett is almost here and I just wanted her there.

So they call me and say that I will deliver at 37 weeks - to the day. that means a friday. and they say that another doctor is on call but is there someone that i would like to request. and of course I say dr. womack and she says she'll check to see if she can do that. and low and behold - she calls back an hour later confirming that dr. womack will do the c-section and that carrington will be there to assist!! Praise! I'm so excited.

So the big day is coming. May 29th. Less than four weeks now. That's four weekends. 27 days. I'm just amazed at how fast it came. They chopped off 3 weeks. Not a June 19th baby. Not even a June baby. A May baby. I'm so excited and nervous.

This weekend has been perfect. The perfect time with our family of three. Breakfast at Melanie's, time with friends, lots of playing outside. I'm so thankful.

I know the next four weeks are going to fly by. There are just so many things going on in may: mother's day, my baby brunch celebration, hopefully a trip to charlotte for some relaxing by the pool, our 5th anniversary...
and then there's all the stuff that has to be done at school: math assessments, reading assessments, report cards, field trips.

It all makes me so excited. But I want to take it all in. Every moment. Every kick in my belly, every moment with just me and Grayson, the long stretches of sleep (although they pretty much always include a potty break).

Pray for us. Pray that Bennett's every cell is ready and developed for May 29th. Pray that he doesn't need a thing when he's born except to be in my arms and nurse. Pray that my body handles surgery well and recovers quickly. Pray that Grayson knows how much he is loved even during a time where I'm not able to pick him up or give him undivided attention. Less than four weeks until we're a family of four!
